This, That, These, Those – A Guide to English Demonstratives
Understanding when to use this, that, these, and those is essential for accurate communication in English. These words, called demonstratives, help us indicate objects, people, or ideas that are either near or far from us.
This, These
Use this for singular objects that are close by and these for plural objects:
- This is my new watch.
- These are my sisters Anna and Jenny.
That, Those
Use that for singular objects that are farther away and those for plural objects:
- That man is very strange.
- I need those boxes over there.
Using with Nouns and Without Nouns
You can use this, that, these, and those with or without a noun:
- This watch is very expensive.
- I like that woman in the park.
- Who is that?
- “What are those?” “They are old pictures.”
This is John (Introductions and on the Phone)
We use this when we introduce people and on the telephone:
- Hi, this is Tim. (Tim on the telephone)
- Laura: ‘Hi, Sara. This is my friend Paul.’ Sara: ‘Hi, Paul. Nice to meet you.’
