Past Simple – Regular and Irregular Verbs
What is the Past Simple Tense?
The past simple tense is used to describe actions or states that happened and finished in the past. We often use it with time expressions like yesterday, last week, or two days ago.
Examples:
- Jessica called me last night.
- We went to the park last weekend.
Regular Verbs
To form the past simple with regular verbs, we add -ed to the base form of the verb. This rule applies to most verbs.
Examples:
- I played football yesterday.
- She watched a movie last night.
Spelling Rules for Regular Verbs
- If a verb ends in e, just add d (e.g., like → liked).
- If a verb ends in a single consonant after a vowel, double the consonant and add -ed (e.g., stop → stopped).
- If a verb ends in y preceded by a consonant, change y to i and add -ed (e.g., cry → cried).
Irregular Verbs
Irregular verbs do not follow the regular pattern of adding -ed. Instead, their past simple forms are unique and must be memorized.
Examples:
- He went to the store.
- They ate dinner at 8 PM.
Common Irregular Verbs
