Comparative adjectives – older than, more important than, etc.
Comparative adjectives are used to compare two things, people, or ideas. At the A1 level, it is essential to understand how to form and use comparative adjectives correctly in sentences.
How to Form Comparative Adjectives
Comparative adjectives are formed in two ways:
- -er + than: For short (one-syllable) adjectives.
- more + adjective + than: For longer (two or more syllables) adjectives.
When to Use -er or More
- Use -er for short adjectives:
- old → older
- cheap → cheaper
- Use more for longer adjectives:
- important → more important
- comfortable → more comfortable
Examples:
Irregular Adjectives
Some adjectives have irregular comparative forms:
- good → better than
- bad → worse than
- far → farther/further than
Using Than
When using comparative adjectives, always follow them with 'than' to show the comparison:

- This chair is ______ (comfortable) than that one. (Answer: more comfortable)
- The weather is ______ (cold) today than yesterday. (Answer: colder)
- Her bag is ______ (heavy) than mine. (Answer: heavier)
