1. Use of a/an
First Mention
Use a (before consonant sounds) or an (before vowel sounds) when mentioning something for the first time.
- I saw a bird in the garden.
- She bought an apple from the market.
- He is a artist. (Correct: an artist)
Jobs and Descriptions
Use a/an to describe someone's profession or to indicate one of a kind.
- She is a doctor.
- It was an amazing movie.
- He works as engineer. (Correct: an engineer)
2. Use of the
Second Mention
Use the when mentioning something that has already been introduced.
- I saw a dog. The dog was very friendly.
- She found an old book. The book was torn.
Specific Things
Use the when referring to something specific or unique.
- Can you pass the salt?
- I love watching the stars at night.
- I want to see stars. (Correct: the stars)
3. No Article
General Meaning
No article is used with plural or uncountable nouns when referring to them generally.

Meals and Activities
No article is needed for meals, sports, or general activities.
